Love my neighbours

Great neighbours are good for Friday wines, saying hi to as you put the trash out, and complaining with a about the not so good, play loud music all night neighbours.
Living out here in the Sounds they are even more important. We check up on someone who hasn't been seen for a little while, feed pets while owners are away, collect eggs and mail, mow lawns - if absolutely have to, keep an eye out whenever one of the guys goes out in their dinghy to bring in a net, haul out tractors stuck in the mud. And often tourist's cars in the same predicament.

I have access to a number of homes in our bay, same as those people can get into our house any time it's necessary, especially when home owners are away and we've had a storm or one of the shake, rattle and roll events.
Even better, in summer neighbours are great for sitting on someone's deck with and enjoying a wine and homemade pizzas.
We rely on these people to have our backs as we do them.

Do you have good neighbours you can rely on in good times and bad?

  2. Sue, good neighbours are a real blessing, aren't they? Even if you don't see them all the time. We're currently checking a neighbour's mail while he's away and know we can ask other neighbours to keep an eye on our place too. We also have an end of street Christmas party that brings everyone together and is a great way of meeting new arrivals and generally catching up.

    1. Annie, it's really great to know someone's got your back in a quiet kind of way. Like the idea of a bay Christmas party. It wold probably be on our deck!

  3. Sounds idyllic, Sue. We first met our neighbours at our little farm the first night we moved in when we noticed a horse wandering along the side of the road when we drove past their place. We knocked on the door fairly late at night to let them know. They came around the next day to our place, delighted we had brought a horse-loving girl and her friend to the valley. They told us then we all needed to watch out for each other as neighbours and so it has been for the last twelve years!

  4. Your neighbours sound lovely, Sue. I think good neighbours are a godsend. Our favourite neighbours (we'd lived next door to each other for 20 years) moved away a year ago, and we still miss them. :-)

    1. I can relate to that, Michelle. I'd miss any of ours if they left. It's such a great rapport to have.

  5. Your neighbours sound fantastic Sue.
I currently barely know my neighbours - as I currently am in a council housing complex in Wellington, and have had issues in the past with neighbours harrassing me (in the previous council complex I was in) and the immediate neighbour being nuts at times, I've found I'm better off keeping to myself.

Growing up we had fantastic neighbours in the houses surrounding us so I do appreciate the difference that good neighbours make.

    1. Sorry to hear that, Lyn. When I lived in the city I found it wasn't as easy to establish good relationships with neighbours, everyone seemed so busy.

  6. Your neighbours sound like a great bunch. When we first moved into our cul de sac we were among the first three houses built and occupied. As each new family moved in, we acquired more friends and drinking buddies and babysitters etc. Now, twenty something years later, there are only two of us originals and there have been a steady rolling change of neighbours and some properties becoming rentals with, unfortunately, not always nice people moving in. Luckily the ones that attract police attention have always been quick to move on (or be moved on) but life has definitely changed. I love the sound of your neighborhood, Sue.
