I have a very important question to ask.....

Last night we were going through some REALLY old photos and came across this one. Well, it's a bit more than a photo, it's a photo made into a postcard that we sent back from Greece when we were living there LOTS of years ago. We mailed them to all our friends and family and then waited. After a week or so our phone ran hot with lots of squeals and congratulations down the line.

On the front it says "The Proposal" - Lesvos, Greece.

On the back in huge red letters it says "ACCEPTED".
It still brings a little tear to my eye when I think about that day. We'd been riding little motorbikes all over the island and then we found a field of poppies and I was asked that very special question. When we were back in Athens we bought the ring, and of course it's still on my finger.

Coincidentally, right now I'm considering having a proposal in my latest book. The second in my "Weddings in Westchester" series will be out soon and since both the hero and heroine are in charge of wedding companies so a proposal would have to have to be spectacular!

What's the very best proposal you've ever heard of, or do you have a proposal story of your own?

And just because it's Friday and just because I can, let's eavesdrop on a few memorable proposals. I think my favourite is the wakeboarding one...!!

Happy weekend X

  1. Awww Barb - that's soooooo romantic. Love it!

My husband has all the romanticism of a lump of stale bread so nothing very grand for me but I guess that was also back in the days before flashmobs! I pity any man proposing these days - it seems to be a competition to outdo the next guy....

Love the video clipped. You gave me my morning happy cry. Thank you :-)

    1. I hear you on the pressure, Amy! Don't think i'd settle for anything less than a touch of skywriting and a movie trailer now ;)

  2. Hi Barbara

What a beautiful proposal awesome :) Strange I don't think my hubby ever did really propose LOL we had been going out since I was 15 and we just kinda decided to layby and engagement ring when I was 18 and then set the date for the wedding two years later I should have pushed I think but we are still together 38 years later and as for beautiful proposals yours would have to be the best :)

    Have Fun

    1. Since you were 15?! That's so beautiful. Us romance writers love those childhood sweetheart stories. Thirty eight yers is a fantastic achievement :-)

  3. I love your proposal, Barb! So gorgeous and romantic and the postcards to friends and family must have been great fun!

I enjoyed the video of the proposals... but I confess that I'm a bit conflicted over whether public proposals are a good thing or not. If everything goes well then it's lovely but if it doesn't, if the person being proposed to isn't on the same page, then the pressure of that situation to say yes even if you didn't want to would be enormous. In lots of ways it's an intensely private moment so pulling it out in public - I wonder, is the proposer is trying impress the person they're proposing to, or everyone else... Yowee! Did I get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning or what! LOL

    1. I'm with you on the public proposal, Sharon -- just...no way! Unless the person proposing has already scouted out the intended's view on the matter, in which case extra brownie points should be earned.

    2. Oh, absolutely Sharon! (Try looking for proposals gone bad on youtube!!). Thank goodness we don't write about unrequited love...gotta think a refusal after something so public would go straight to the heart...

  4. Awesome proposal announcement Barbara. Looking at the date below the photo, it was also before the advent of email being commonplace so it was a fabulous way to share the news too.

Too single to have any proposal of my own to share, but I'm sure eventually I'll find the person for me. As long as the proposal has been thought out and is suited to me and Mr Right-for-me, I'm sure I'll love it.

I look forward to that proposal scene in your Weddings in Westchester book.

    1. I really did show my age with that date, didn't I Lyn!!! Of course I was only 10 at the time ;-) And yes to the email thing. Funny thing was we had a long distance relationship a little after that while he was winemaking overseas and I used to print out all his emails. I wouldn't do that now!!

And I totally agree on the "right proposal from the right one" :-)

  5. Love your proposal story, Barb -- the postcard was an awesome idea! Sighing now over a field full of poppies.

I proposed to my DH on Leap Day...but I fear I wasn't all that romantic -- just waggled my eyebrows and popped the question over our morning coffee. I thought he did awful well not to spit his all over the place. ;-)

    1. Now, I DID know you were a leap year proposer, Michelle, and I think that's hugely romantic. I can just imagine your eyebrows waggling. What a very smart man Mr Douglas must be to be to have said yes :-)

  6. Aww that is truly romantic! The post card is lovely. That definitely sounds like something fit for a romance novel :D

My husband proposed to me after whisking me off to a fancy hotel (so I totally knew it was coming haha) but what I didn't know was that we also had our engagement party that night, so he's rounded up all our family and friends to be at a restaurant, including my grandfather who had cancer at the time. Needless to say all the first pics of our engagement are me crying.

    1. Stefanie!!!!!!! I think you may have just provided the inspiration for my proposal scene! THAT has to be one of the most romantic proposals of all time (and shows how pretty jolly confident your fiance to be was that you would say yes!!!)

    2. Ha! I told J that and he was pretty chuffed :D Apparently he told my father and grandfather about it before hand and they said 'if she doesn't accept one of you will be kicked out of the family. hint: it's her." LOL

  7. What a lovely proposal, Barb!! And that video is fantastic.

I was flying out to America to go to Duke University for six months and the night before I left my now hubby and I stay at a lovely hotel. Half way through dinner it suddenly struck me that he was going to propose. I got so nervous, I couldn't stop talking. He had to ask me to be quiet so he could get the question out. Hilarious!
