I Have A Confession To Make

by Bronwyn Jameson

I have just returned from the Post Office.  I knew I had parcels to collect, thanks to the notice card in our roadside mailbox.  I didn't realise how many parcels until I fronted the counter and our postmaster gave me a raised eyebrow look and asked if I'd brought along a porter.

I was glad I hadn't brought along my resident porter, actually, because there are some things he doesn't need to know.  Such as when one goes a little crazy with the long weekend internet shopping.  Oops.

In my defence, these purchases do cover gifts for Mothers' Day, a wedding and a birthday. And I did save fuel and time by shopping from home.  But obviously there is some guilt attached to this shopping expedition or I would not feel this compulsion to confess.

So, my friends, what do you have to confess?  If not a retail blowout, have you been over-indulging in the chocolate cake or the salted caramel department?  Have you been reading or browsing the online mag's instead of getting your pages done?  Is your Kindle so weighty with new purchases that you're having trouble lugging it around?

Come on, 'fess up.  I really really hope I'm not alone here…

  1. About the only thing I need to sneak into the house are books. I have way too many now, but can always find more I just need to have.

    1. I can ALWAYS justify a book purchase or two. Or ten. Or twenty. Isn't it amazing how we expand the space/bookshelves to out the books?

  2. Definitely not alone, Bronwyn. I made the silly mistake of telling bored husband to pay my credit card bill while he was doing the other bills today. There were a few deliveries last week that I'd collected from the letterbox while he was busy. Oops.
Why have these cards if we don't use them?

    1. Oh, I like your attitude Sue. Credit cards are made for shopping, right? I'm just home from a big grocery shop, so I feel quite justified in using it this time.

  3. Bron, no need for guilt, surely? As you say, you've been saving money by shopping without the car.

I do confess, I've been lashing out on a few books lately. Not sure when I'll have time to read them but how can I resist?

    1. I hear you Annie. I have so many books in all my TBR piles - physical books, on the Nook, on the Kindle. And yet I can never resist adding to the collections. It is a compulsion.

  4. I have so many books on my Kindle, Bron!!! Will I ever have the chance to read them all? I'm not much of a shopper, so don't usually suffer post-shopper guilt.

But, I do have a magazine obsession. You name it - Marie Claire, House & Garden, Home Beautiful, MindFood, Women's Weekly, Women's Health - you name it, I buy it. Trouble is I hardly have time to read them and then they end up stacked all over the house unread until I give them away to friends. Sad really!

    1. Ha. I just finished writing how many books are unread on my Kindle!!! And, ah, a magazine-aa-holic. There are worse and more expensive ways to go. And they are very useful for research.

  5. A beautifully shaggy Greek flokati rug is my guilty secret, Bron. I'm still awaiting its delivery and as it's not that easy to hide I'm going to have to firm up my speech about what an absolute necessity it is. What else is a beautiful pooch supposed to sleep on in the middle of winter? I hope you're enjoying all your goodies :)

    1. I bet it is beautiful, Barb. When it arrives you must post pictures; I want to see it! With pooch being comfortable and warm.

  6. Who me? I have nothing to confess, nothing at all! Really! Truly! Would I lie to you?! (Trying to make up my mind if I should be nodding or shaking my head to give credence to this sad piece of fiction! LOL!)

Seriously, Bron - books are my main downfall! I'm really starting to love e-books - no packaging, no bulging bag as I return from the post office! What's not to love!

    1. LOL, Sharon. I can just picture you nodding and shaking you head at the same time while looking angelic. Sort of.

The beauty of eBooks -- well, one of the beauties -- is that they are the true secret indulgence. No one need ever know. Well, except for Big Brother Amazon. And the credit card purveyors.

  7. Bron;

You could be telling my story. I love to shop, I love to shop online and I try to make sure my packages arrive when the hubby and kids are at work and school. It's my dirty little secret until there is an unexpected bank holiday or I get upgraded to priority shipping and the packages show up when everyone is home!

  8. Oh, Kathy, my sister in shopping! Another reason why I love you. It is a bugger when deliveries outsmart us though.

  9. I love shopping full stop.
I will never lose my money on-line gambling - maybe a little on-line shopping but guaranteed a win.

I must confess that I buy books for my kindle all the time I am never going to be able to read them all but I buy them because I want to read them LOL

  11. That is the perfect reason to buy them, Helen, even if there aren't enough hours in the day/week/month/year to get to them all. It's always nice to have the choice there of what to read next. And for the amount of entertainment provided, books really are great value.

  12. Oh, no, not confession time!

Though, I don't think you need to feel guilty, Bron. After all, you bought all those presents AND saved on fuel and wear and tear on the car. Very smart I'd say. ;-)

As for me…well, somehow my shoes have proliferated! I don't know how that's happened. Honestly. The thing is, when one can buy pretty (and comfy!) shoes for the ridiculous price of $5 well…why stop at just one pair, right?

    1. Gosh, I love how enabling you cats are. Making me feel all good about the saving on fuel and wear and tear on our car. Thanks, Michelle.

Shoes breed like rabbits. This is a fact. :-)

  13. Like many of us here, I have so many books! I have both a nook and a kindle and hubby has no clue how many are stored on these devices. I pay the bills so he also doesn't know when I purchase giftcards to load onto my ereaders. ;)

  14. Hi Marcy. So lovely to "see" you. It's been too long.

It is a smart woman who looks after the household bill payment and budget. I am the same. In fact I'm in the process of writing a long and detailed set of notes on how everything is organised, where to find the various accounts, what's in our bank accounts, etc, because if I happened to not come home one day (touch wood etc) he would not have a clue.
